Advanced Placement/Honors Courses

The district offers a variety of Honors courses for academically talented students. Placement into Honors courses is determined by various criteria. For incoming ninth graders Honors courses are offered in World Language. Placement in these courses is determined by course work, teacher recommendation, and the results of a placement test in the eighth grade. For current freshmen, placement into Honors courses for grade 10 is determined by the following criteria:

A minimum average grade of 90 or better in any prerequisite college prep level course.

Teacher recommendation attesting to consistency in effort and high academic achievement.

Written parental consent for Honors placement.

Sophomores and juniors, who wish to be considered for Honors placement during the following year and are not presently enrolled in a prerequisite Honors course, must take a qualifying exam. Qualifying examinations are routinely given during the early spring. Testing dates are published in the daily bulletin and announced as part of morning announcements.

Interested students are encouraged to speak to the subject teacher, counselor or subject supervisor for further information.

All Honors and Advanced Placement courses are weighted for purpose of calculating class rank. A final average of 80 in an Honors course is required to maintain Honors placement for the following year. Effective with the 2006-2007 school year, Honors courses will receive 5 additional points and AP courses will receive 10 additional points.

To qualify for an Advanced Placement course, students should have maintained an 85 or higher final average in the appropriate pre-requisite course(s) (individual department requirements are available in the guidance office) and have received teacher recommendations. In addition, students preparing for entry into an Advanced Placement course may be required to take a qualifying test, complete required summer reading, and/or complete a summer project.

All students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses are expected to take the Advanced Placement Examination for the course.
